Emergencies may happen anytime and anywhere. Therefore, we must be ready at all times. In the case of having some emergencies with the plumbing system, we should be knowledgeable enough on how things work and function within the system. In addition to this, we must also be equipped with the appropriate plumbing tools that can be used to temporarily fix small damages. Along with this, home owners must also have at least some basic knowledge on how and where these tools must be used. Here’s a list of basic emergency plumbing tools that you must have on hand.

1. Plunger

Plungers are best suited to eliminate blockages in sinks and toilets. This tool is usually made of a wooden stick which is the handle and attached at one end is a rubber cup. It is the most common and essential tool in getting rid of blockages. Plungers have basically two common types which are the cup plunger and the flange plunger. These two types have the same goal which is to remove blockages but differs to where it must be used. It is best to know where it must be used for you not to waste much effort. A cup plunger or also known as the standard plunger is used for areas with flat surfaces such as kitchen sink, shower and bath tub. Most home owners use this type of plunger in toilets. However, there is a type of plunger that is specifically designed for toilets which are the flange plunger. A flange plunger looks quite the same with the cup plunger. The only difference between the two is that the flange plunger got an extra flap which is connected to the cup. The flange plunger is best suited for curved surfaces such as the toilet.

2. Drain Rod and Wire

There are some cases where the plunger won’t be enough to do the job. However, you don’t need to lose hope since you still got a lot of substitute tools to use. This includes the drain rod or the drain wire. This tool is used to clear any obstructions that can’t be removed by the plunger. A metal hanger can be used by simply straightening the wire. Place the wire into the plughole and pull the blockage. Do not push it for the blockage may go further. One main tip to remove the blockage is to twist the rod in a clockwise direction.

3. Drain Cleaner

The usage of chemicals to clean drains is actually a big no-no as they are hazardous and can possibly worsen the problem. It is also poisonous so might as well keep this away from the reach of your children and pets. However, without minding the hazard it brings, this can still be used as an immediate remedy to your plumbing emergency. Just bear in mind not to use this as a solution to a completely blocked drain as it can damage pipes. This cleaner is applicable to drains which are partially blocked.

4. Heavy-duty Gloves

Clearing blocked drains could be a smelly and stinky job. With this, you would surely need to use a heavy-duty glove. The glove is used as a protector from any substances you may encounter in the drain.
