Clay pipes were used a lot not only in sewer systems but with plumbing in houses as well. This was evident with houses that were made in the past. The clay pipes quality that was used during in the past was not good as today. It was still durable during those times but if you compare it with most modern pipe materials, it’s definitely inferior. There are even VCPs that are still in good condition even if exposed to chemical for 25 years which is impressive compared to asbestos cement that are in an awful state despite only 14 years of exposure.
The lifespan of VCP is approximately 100 years which is actually a long life cycle for a sewer pipe. Most sewer pipes materials can only last 40-60 years, and can age badly just like metal pipes. Having these clay pipes is also economical in some point since you won’t have to spend money for restoration or repairs for a long period of time.

VCP can withstand great physical trauma thanks to its tough ceramic surface which was refined by high temperature in its manufacturing process. These pipes can be cleaned regularly with high pressure water jets, even those units that are capable of using 25,000 psi. This just shows how tough and durable vitrified clay pipes are.
